indonesia (jakarta): day 8

30 may 2009 - my final day in indonesia! i would like to tell you that it ended with a big BANG. however, it was more like a smooth landing after a good flight.

_MG_1555
traveller's hotel, where we stayed on our final night in jakarta.

_MG_1558
we had a few hours to kill before our flight. i accompanied my colleague, lim, who wanted to visit the taman mini ndonesia indah (beautiful indonesia in miniature park).

_MG_1562
it is basically a huge park with samplings of indonesia's >250 cultures.

_MG_1563

_MG_1565
as we need to cover the huge park in a short period of time, we hired a bicycle each. i thought riding the bike was more fun than the actual deal.

_MG_1567

_MG_1568

_MG_1569
it was around this time i decided i have had enough of the different architecture of the buildings, and got distracted by the workers dressed in bunny suits on a hot noon day.

_MG_1570
i guess someone decided s/he couldn't take the heat anymore and went for a break.

indonesia (bandung/jakarta): day 7

29th may 2009 - we took an overnight train from jogjakarta and arrived in bandung early in the morning. after having buffet breakfast (20,000 rupiah) at hotel guci, we grabbed our luggage and headed for the train station again to take another train to jakarta.

_MG_1503

_MG_1508

_MG_1509

_MG_1517
after spending so much time on the train, in the economy class compartment, i was getting rather tired of it.

_MG_1531
more so when i encountered a passenger who smokes, seated right in front of me!

_MG_1525
at least i got rewarded with a scenic view of the paddy field.

_MG_1528

_MG_1534
once we arrived in jakarta, we tried getting a room in ibis mangga dua hotel again. big mistake as there was a tour group checking in to the hotel on the same day. hence, there wasn't any room for us. we borrowed a cell phone from a local tourist and tried getting a room in another hotel. finally, we settled for the lesser known travellers hotel.

_MG_1546
after we checked in to our room, we wasted no time in getting a ride to mangga dua square to have our dinner and do some last minute shopping.

_MG_1550
our room for the final night in indonesia.

indonesia (jogjakarta): day 6

28th may 2009 - after taking the overnight train from bandung the previous night, we arrived at jogjakarta early the next morning. we hired a cab driver (500,000 rupiah) at the train station to take us around places of interest in jogjakarta, fondly known as jogja by the locals.

_MG_1345
first stop was the borobudur temple (entrance fee: 125,000 rupiah). this is indonesia's single most visited tourist attraction. to maximize our experience, we hired a guide (50,000 rupiah) to bring us around the place.

_MG_1344
ylang ylang can be seen on the ground of the temple. it is local to indonesia.

_MG_1349
according to good old wikipedia, borobudur is a ninth-century mahayana buddhist monument. it comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 buddha statues, although i did not count them.

_MG_1355a

_MG_1359
minor restoration work in progress

_MG_1362

_MG_1365
pictures depicting the life of buddha is carved on certain panels of the temple's wall. very well-preserved i would say.

_MG_1367

_MG_1368
the monument is also a place for buddhist pilgrimage

_MG_1372
bee hive

_MG_1379
a main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa.

_MG_1383
the bee was said to be a permanent resident atop this buddha statue. true enough, when the bee was disturbed, it flew away only to come back to the same spot within minutes.

_MG_1384

_MG_1387
active volcanoes opposite the monument

_MG_1388
a group picture with the indonesian students who practised their english with me. when i was approached by the fourth group of students, i tactfully told them to look for someone else.

_MG_1389

_MG_1405
without a doubt, visiting the borobudur temple was the highlight of my indonesian trip

_MG_1421
next stop was a smaller temple, which we did not enter. a quick picture outside and off we went to our next destination

_MG_1423

_MG_1426
as jogja is famous for its silver, naturally, we visited their outlet for silverware

_MG_1430
handmade silver bracelet

_MG_1436
tools of the trade

_MG_1439
besides silver, jogja is also famous for is its batik. the driver brought us to a shop that sells all things batik. batik dress, batik blouse, batik shirt, batik wallet, batik decors, batik.. i think you get the picture.

_MG_1444

_MG_1446
we had lunch at a nearby coffeeshop. the waiter gave us the menu and told us to write our order. i had bakso mie with mango juice, again. my colleague opted for teh botol with satay.

_MG_1447

_MG_1448
after our lunch, we visited the kraton yogyakarta (sultan palace, entrance fee: 5,000 rupiah). sad to say, there was nothing much to see.

_MG_1449
after about half an hour of walking around the compound of the sultan palace, our guide told us that our entrance fee entitled us to visit a nearby building. he then proceeded to lead us down a deserted lane.

_MG_1450
next thing i know, we were inside a shop that sells batik.

_MG_1453
from then on, it was hard selling all the way. but we managed to get away after about 15 minutes of sales pitch. this was probably the only unpleasant experience we had throughout our stay in indonesia.

_MG_1456
our final destination before leaving jogja was the prabanam temple (entrance fee: 116,000 rupiah)

_MG_1463

_MG_1464

_MG_1467
although it looked magnificent from afar, a closer look would reveal the damage done by the earthquake in may 2006.

_MG_1470

_MG_1480

_MG_1484
certain areas were cordoned off

_MG_1489
three years on, the rocks still lie in ruins

_MG_1497
we ended our time in jogjakarta with their famous ayam gudeg (green jackfruit sweet stew chicken) and a glass of jus alpukat (avacado juice). after dinner, i used the coffee shop's washroom to have a quick wipe down and changed into another t-shirt for a more comfortable overnight trip back to bandung.
all in all, i had a memorable trip in jogjakarta.

indonesia (bandung): day 5

27th may 2009

_MG_1304
we stayed at guci hotel on the second night in bandung as the previous hotel was fully booked. i highly recommend this hotel for two simple reasons - a) a gallon of drinking water inclusive in each room b) lovely breakfast buffet. look out for their homemade pink guava juice.

_MG_1306
before going any where else with our rented car & driver (300,000 rupiah), we stopped at the money changer to convert more of our ringgit malaysia to rupiah.

_MG_1316
about an hour and a half away from bandung, is tangkuban parahu (entrance fee 17,000 rupiah). this is bandung's most famous tourist volcano.

_MG_1307
tangkuban parahu is a volcano with three craters into which areas tourists can walk through. however, extra charges apply and we did not bother negotiating.

_MG_1318
panoramic scenery with cooling weather.

_MG_1320
next destination, tea plantation. nothing interesting though.

_MG_1323

_MG_1324
we stopped over at jasmine cafe for lunch.

_MG_1327
fried rice with strawberry milkshake (45,000 rupiah)

_MG_1331
after lunch, my colleague stopped for sate kerinchi (rabbit satay) by the roadside while i sipped at teh botol, which i noticed was popular amongst the indonesians. it is sweetened tea in a bottle.

_MG_1328
then we visited to the strawberry farm (entrance fee 5,000 rupiah). accompanied my colleague to pick the strawberries.

_MG_1336
after all that, the driver drove us back to bandung. with some more time to kill before we catch our train to jogjakarta, we decided to visit some more factory outlets. i got bored after a while and decide to take pictures instead.

_MG_1337

_MG_1335

_MG_1338

_MG_1339
towards evening, we told the driver to bring us to any local restaurants for dinner nearby the train station. he took us to this nasi padang place. the food looks good but the taste is far from it. oh well, at least it kept us filled for the overnight journey to jogjakarta...

Saturday, July 04, 2009

indonesia (bandung): day 4

26th may 2009 - we spent the day travelling mostly on angkut (2,500; 1,500; 2,500 rupiah) from one shopping place to another. the angkut drivers were very helpful to provide us the direction. we walked a lot too. i enjoyed travelling the local way as i got to see more of bandung.

_MG_1268
good old angkut

_MG_1276
factory outlet!

_MG_1278
more factory outlet!

_MG_1283
generic perfumes

_MG_1285
endless shopping

_MG_1286
after a while, i got bored of shopping and started looking around, taking pictures; while waiting for my colleague/friend, lim to be done.

_MG_1287

_MG_1289
i enjoyed my lunch - mie jogja (14,000 rupiah), baso malang (10,500 rupiah) and jus alpukat (12,000 rupiah).

_MG_1296
our final stop was at rumah mode. if i were to choose only one factory outlet to shop in, this would be it. good variety of clothes.

_MG_1292

_MG_1294

_MG_1297
we spent 2 - 3 hours here. but if you think i bought a lot on this shopping spree, you are mistaken. total damage was only 292 800 rupiah (rm100). after a long day of shopping, we took a cab (20,000 rupiah) back to our hotel for a good night rest.

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

indonesia (jakarta & bandung): day 3

25th may 2009 - the next morning, we walked over to pasar pagi behind ibis mangga dua hotel for breakfast.

_MG_1234
i had soto banjar (chicken with noodle in soup & rice! 16,000 rupiah) and jus alpukat (avacado juice, 15,000 rupiah).

_MG_1236
pasar pagi... worth spending at least a day here.

_MG_1239
stalls along the side walk, a common sight.

_MG_1243
around noon, we took a cab (30,000 rupiah) from our hotel to gambir train station, where we took a 3-hour economy class train ride (25,000 rupiah) to bandung.

_MG_1249
passengers can buy their meals/drinks on board but i chose to settle for half a dozen of doughnuts which i bought earlier on from pasar pagi.

_MG_1254
when we arrived at bandung, we tried to hail a cab to hotel cemerlang which is only about 5- minute walk from the train station. but the unscrupulous cab driver refused to lower his price below 50,000 rupiah. in the end, we took an angkut, which cost us only 2,500 rupiah. hmpf!

_MG_1258
hotel cemerlang (318,000 rupiah per night, buffet breakfast inclusive)

_MG_1261
d'batoe, a boutique hotel we saw along our way to istana plaza for our dinner.

_MG_1263
another interesting landmark, church of emmanuel.

_MG_1265
tengsing udang (21,000 rupiah) and mango juice (16,500 rupiah) for dinner.

_MG_1266
i love the mango juice. nice and thick.

Saturday, June 13, 2009

indonesia (jakarta): day 1 & 2

23 may 2009 - my colleague & i travelled to indonesia for a much needed 1-week break.

_MG_1192
we arrived at soekarno-hatta international airport around midnight and immediately hailed a bluebird cab (97,000 rupiah) to ibis mangga dua hotel (400,000 rupiah per night). after checking in, we had supper and then went off to bed.

24 may 2009 - the next day, we walked over to pasar pagi behind our hotel to grab breakfast.

_MG_1195
i had a bowl of yummy seafood tom yam (20,000 rupiah) while my colleague had a plate of fried rice.

_MG_1196
then, we took an angkut (similar version of our bas mini, 2,500 rupiah) to our next destination. while waiting for the angkut, i took a picture of a nicely decorated bajaj (auto rickshaw).

_MG_1232
ended the day with a local brew (24,000 rupiah). perfect.

Tuesday, June 02, 2009

23 may 2009 - after a late night out, we woke up early the next morning, headed for the sabah fish market (SAFMA).

_MG_0505
after driving for approximately 3 hours, covering about 200km from kota kinabalu, we arrived in kudat. first stop was at this coffeeshop - kedai air sekerim nam sin.

_MG_0503
i love this pastry with strawberry filling... and we were in for a treat as they just brought these out from the oven.

then we checked ourselves into hotel ria, which is located near the ferry terminal to pulau banggi.
_MG_0557
the rate for a room with twin beds is about RM80 per night. nice and clean, reasonably priced too. highly recommended.

_MG_0508
we wasted no time and immediately drove to the end of the esplanade to take a few shots. unfortunately, the sun proved to be too much for us and we were soon headed back to our hotel room for a quick nap.

when the sun set, we decided to explore the town on foot...

... and ended up at a dock 10-minute away from our hotel.

_MG_0548
we had prawns, squid and fish. yummy! but crabs, scallops and venison were unavailable that night. to book in advance, call 016 831 7338.
we ended our night early, reading in our room.

the next morning, after having the famous yong tau fu (stuffed tofu) and chun ken (eggroll), we checked out of our hotel and drove back to kota kinabalu.

_MG_0566
stopped by the road side on our way back to get some corn for my parents.

addiction

lately, i've been addicted to jigs potato crisps - sweet n savoury flavour.

usually, i walk over to likas servay hypermarket across the college to top up my daily fill. but lately, it is out of stock.

so, today after a walk in likas sports complex, i drove over to chiu tai seng supermart in search of my fill. unfortunately, it was out of stock as well! my craving led me to likas mart. with great anticipation, i searched and found the shelf which displays jigs potato crisps. it appears untouched. almost sacred (ok, exaggeration). pretty soon, i figured out the reason...

i normally pay only RM1.60 per packet. here, at likas mart, they sell it for RM1.99! that makes the price 24.38% higher than the other stores! as if that's not enough, they round up the total to RM4 for the two packets that i bought. oh well, at least it is sufficient to tide me through the next couple of days.

addiction, such force of compulsion. deliver me from evil.

treasure in clay pots

taken from "seeds of the kingdom", a devotional from ellel ministries international for 15th april 2009, written by angela weir.

We possess this precious treasure, the divine Light of the Gospel, in frail, human vessels of earth, that the grandeur and exceeding greatness of the power may be shown to be from God and not from ourselves. 2 Corinthians 4: 7, Amp

"I was listening to a radio play one afternoon recently, telling of the beginning of Jesus' ministry here on earth. What came across to me so vividly in this story, that we all know so well, was how very ordinary Jesus' first disciples were.

This was shown dramatically when Jesus told Peter and Andrew to let down their nets, and having caught nothing throughout a long, hard night's fishing, they hauled in a huge catch. Peter's reaction was one of brokenness and fear as he told Jesus to go away from him, recognising in Jesus a purity and light that showed up all his own sinfulness.

So often we feel inadequate and ill-prepared for serving Jesus. We want to give Him our very best but feel failures, as we sin again or make mistakes. As we look at Peter's life and see the many mistakes he made, we can take comfort from the fact the Jesus still chose him - just as He still chooses us - to work with Him for His Kingdom purposes. He really loves us that much!

When we belong to Him we have the treasure of the Gospel (good news) within us, frail vessels that we are, which enables us to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and, in His strength, start all over again."

those who know me, know that my life is marked with sins, mistakes and failures. truly, i want to give my very best to God... but i'm learning that this can't possibly be accomplished by my own strength (yes, i've tried, for too many times).
sometimes, i wonder what went wrong.
sometimes, i want to give up.
sometimes, i feel like running away.
sometimes, i face the world with a mask.
sometimes, i withdraw.
but, to know that He still chose me! He still chose me, with my sins, failures and mistakes! HE STILL CHOSE ME! HE STILL CHOSE ME!
(selah)
may i learn to depend more on my God. my Rock.
dependable.
trustworthy.
unchanging.
solid.
immovable.
eternal.

monsopiad cultural village

14th march 2009 (sat) - a couple of friends & i visited the monsopiad cultural village.

_MG_0472
this village was founded a decade or so ago in memory of a kadazan head hunter, si monsopiad *shudder* thank goodness he is the last headhunter of borneo, who died some three centuries ago.

_MG_0473
located at kampung kuai kadazon penampang, the village showcasts the beliefs, culture and traditions of the kadazan community.

_MG_0416
upon registration and payment of RM20, we were led to a nearby hut where traditional kadazan cultural dances were already in progress.

_MG_0419
dancers were performing to the beats of the traditional gongs

_MG_0426
later, a man, dressed in traditional hunting garb, reenacted the role of monsopiad. i think he was trying to look fearsome but he knew he failed pretty miserably when a little girl walked up close and personal to him, boldly displaying the "peace" sign.

_MG_0430
check out his head gear...
